This past weekend we went fishing with my dad and just as I was about to cast off with my grandpa’s fishing pole, this little turtle swam up to me and I plucked him out of the water (don’t tell anyone though). I brought him in for a visit and the kids just fell in love. They’ve been mesmerized. We built a habitat and everywhere I turn there is a new drawing of our little mini-green friend. Today Ella called him Tuck and it was just such the perfect name.
So, here’s tuck!

Stop in for a peek.

Hi! I found your site about a year ago and was amazed at the opportunities you have provided to your students to be involved with nature. I just graduated this passed May with my teaching degree and am currently looking for a job. That’s when I remembered your site and proceeded to look it up again. As I’m filling out job applications, I have been able to take breaks periodically to check out your entries…they are inspiring. It is so vitally important for children to be outdoors, but in the case of many classrooms, those opportunities are typically frowned upon. You have provided so many ideas for me to use in my own classroom! Even if I can’t take my kids outside as much as I would like, I can always bring nature into the classroom. Thanks so much for all of your memorable stories (and adorable pictures)!

Paul and I were just talking about how much nature makes a difference in our classroom. When things seem tense, tired or overwhelming to us, we just take the kids to the park or to the stream down the street and it just feels like we all are healed instantly. One day we just went for a walk, came upon a creek bed, walked around and investigated and so many of the kids said, “This was my favorite field trip.” Wow, that is all it takes. Some trees, some water and getting out of the classroom.
Having nature in the classroom is important as well. Our classroom is not only living but it is literally crawling. Sarah said we should just grow moss on the carpet. Wait until I write about our RAT!
Thank you so much for your comment. Sometimes I need inspiration too!
Love,
Michelle
